Upvc sliding sash windows in conservation area

Upvc sliding sash windows in conservation area

Project Overview: Character Without the Upkeep

We were recently commissioned to carry out a heritage-style window upgrade for a beautiful period property located within a conservation area in Ilkeston, Derbyshire. The brief was clear: the client wanted to retain the elegant, traditional appearance of timber sash windows, but without the ongoing maintenance and issues typically associated with old wooden frames.  The perfect solution? A set of timber-alternative UPVC sliding sash windows, complete with mechanical joints and slim meeting rails — engineered to mimic the classic style of original sash windows, while delivering modern-day benefits like thermal efficiency, security, and zero maintenance.

The Challenge

As with many conservation area homes in Ilkeston, and surrounding heritage-rich locations like Belper, Duffield, Little Eaton, and West Hallam, homeowners face the challenge of replacing aging windows without compromising the historical or architectural integrity of the property.

The existing timber windows on this home were:

  • Single glazed and poorly insulated
  • Suffering from rot, warping, and flaking paint
  • Difficult to open and close due to age
  • Increasingly expensive to maintain

The homeowner wanted a solution that offered:

  • No regular maintenance
  • A faithful replication of traditional timber sash windows
  • Compliance with conservation guidelines
  • Modern levels of comfort and energy efficiency

Our Solution: Timber-Alternative UPVC Sliding Sash Windows

We supplied and installed a set of UPVC sliding sash windows, expertly crafted to mirror original timber joinery — down to the smallest detail. The windows featured mechanically jointed frames, slimline meeting rails, and deep bottom rails for a traditional sash look, making them virtually indistinguishable from real timber.

Key features of this conservation area window installation:

  • Timber-effect UPVC sliding sash windows
  • Mechanically jointed frames – no welded corners, for an authentic appearance
  • Slim meeting rails – closer to original Victorian/Edwardian profiles
  • White woodgrain finish – gives the aesthetic of painted timber
  • Easy-clean tilt functionality – for convenience and practicality

The Result: Traditional Aesthetics with Modern Benefits

The finished windows blend seamlessly into the character of the property — even under the scrutiny of conservation restrictions. The sliding sash design maintained the elegant vertical proportions and detailing of the original windows, while the homeowner gained all the practical benefits of modern UPVC technology.

The client was particularly impressed with how closely the timber-alternative windows resembled the originals, without the recurring maintenance that timber demands.
